Lost in the woods

I love being in the woods in Japan. I always find something that looks like it has been there for a long time, untouched in recent times and allowed to age. Here in these Nara woods I found a war memorial and a Shinto shrine. Shortly after taking these photos, my memory card filled up. It grew dark. I was unsure if I would find the way out of the woods that night, and spent hours wandering aimlessly.

Nara waterfall

A waterfall in Nara Prefecture. At 1/4000th of a second, one can see the individual water droplets and it is almost unrecognizable as a waterfall. This is much faster than perceived by the human eye. In order to take this photo, it appeared almost black before I edited the raw data due to the fast shutter speed settings.

At 1/60th of a second, the same waterfall appears much more similar to the way we see it in person. This file also required less editing, and was not a black image before editing the raw data. There is less noise in this image, yet I find it somehow less interesting and mystical.
